Fire Alarm / Eemergency Instructions

  • All fire alarms and VT Alerts are to be treated as real unless they specifically indicate they are tests/drills

For a fire alarm

  • immediatly evacuate all students from the OpEL
  • Raise your voice if necessary
  • Be assertive, ask for help
  • Students may leave belongings in the OpEL; it will be locked.
  • Studnets may take their belongings is there is no immediate danger (fire, smoke, police instructions, etc)       
  • If there is visible smoke or fire, leavy everything!
  • Close all OpEL doors and make sure that they are locked.
  • Leave the building using the nearest outside door
  • Only after the "All Clear" signal is announced, return to the OpEL and re-open the doors

For a VT Alert

  • May be delivered by message board, email, text messages, and phone messages
  • Follow the instructions given
    • if they say stay in place, remain in the lab
    • if they say evacuate, exit the building immediatly.
    • instructions may be different for different parts of campus - follow the instructions carefully.

For visible fire or smoke

  • Pull the fire alarm station near the elevator and evacuate the building.

For a medial emergency

  • Call 911
  • Render first aid if you are able.
  • Have someone wait outside the building to direct emergency personnel to the victim.
